Making progress on sustainability for the animal feed and pet food value chain.

Reducing Animal's Environmental Footprint Through Feed

During phase one of the Institute for Feed Education and Research’s sustainability efforts, the team developed a road map and strategic objectives to support the animal food industry’s sustainability efforts. The goal for this project is to advance the role and recognition of animal food as a sustainability solution for our customers (aka farmers and producers). The objectives, available here, resulted in three projects, which include:

  1. Defining data needs and identifying indicators to support customers’ needs.
  2. Quantifying and communicating the environmental benefits of animal food innovations.
  3. Supporting life cycle assessment (LCA) development and use.

With an agreement and funding support from the Animal Nutrition Association of Canada, IFEEDER expanded the scope to now include the U.S. and Canada. IFEEDER initiated projects 1 and 2 above in July 2023. Working with the project’s advisory committee, IFEEDER has prioritized the indicators to include in the evaluation of customer allied industry organizations for project 1 and selected a list of feed additive product categories to use as the basis for assessment and development of a methodology for project 2.

We are still raising funds to support this work. If you would like to be involved and discuss support for this effort, contact us.
