IFEEDER Newsletter: Volume 9, Issue 1

January 9, 2024

Let's Hit the Ground Running in 2024

With the International Production and Processing Expo (IPPE) on the horizon, there’s no time for a post-holiday slump. It’s the perfect time to learn about new technologies and products for the feed industry, but also about what’s underway at the Institute for Feed Education and Research.

Each day during IPPE, I aim to meet with as many industry members and stakeholders as possible, learn something new and highlight IFEEDER’s efforts.

This year at IPPE, IFEEDER will:

  • Preview new resources coming to the Animal Feed Industry Sustainability Toolkit.
  • Provide insights into what our animal feed and pet food customers need from the feed industry to support their sustainability efforts.
  • Address feed as a solution to reducing environmental footprints.

Will you be attending IPPE this year? Let me know now so we can schedule time to connect and discuss resources IFEEDER has to support your organization and the opportunities we have for engagement within our many projects.

You can also attend one of the many sessions where IFEEDER is on the agenda.

  • Tuesday, Jan. 30, 9 a.m. to noonAnimal Agriculture Sustainability Summit in Hall B405-406a; no registration is required, see details below.
  • Wednesday, Jan. 31, 9 a.m. to noonFeed Your ESG: How Feed Will Help Hit Sustainability Targets in Hall A402-402; pre-registration required.
  • Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2-2:20 p.m.TECHTalk “The Environmental Footprint of Feed: Can We Reduce It with Ingredient Decisions?” in Hall A Booth A244.

Will IPPE 2024 be the greatest show on earth? I am working to make it just that for IFEEDER. Join me! Don't forget, early-bird registration ends Friday, Jan. 12.

Mitloehner to Headline Animal Agriculture Sustainability Summit

The Animal Agriculture Sustainability Summit will be held at the upcoming IPPE on Tuesday, Jan. 30, from 9 a.m. to noon ET. Frank Mitloehner, Ph.D., professor and air quality specialist in the cooperative extension in the University of California-Davis’s Department of Animal Science and director of the university’s Clarity and Leadership for Environmental Awareness and Research (CLEAR) Center, will provide the summit’s keynote address. Following Mitloehner’s presentation, representatives of the meat, poultry and egg, swine and animal feed industries will share updates on industry tools and programs that promote sustainability. The free event is open to all registered IPPE attendees. Learn more>>

The Results Are In: Feed Mill Decontamination Study

In 2021, IFEEDER partnered with the Swine Health Information Center, the Animal Nutrition Association of Canada and the United Soybean Board to fund a Kansas State University-led study evaluating how feed mill equipment could be cleaned should the African swine fever (ASF) virus be discovered at a mill. Using three swine viruses already present in the United States, the project analyzed the infectivity of feed and environmental samples after completion of flushing and decontamination procedures, including chemical additives, pelleting of feed and facility decontamination.

The study reported that formaldehyde flushes were the most effective at reducing viral concentrations in both feed and environment. The complete facility decontamination was the only treatment where all three viruses were non-detectable following decontamination. Chlorine dioxide and heat treatments reduced the quantity of RNA across feed mill surfaces, and thermal processing and pelleting reduced the detectable RNA in both feed and environment for all viruses tested. Learn more>>

The IFEEDER Website: A New Look for Better Access

Check out our new look at IFEEDER.org. As part of our strategy to raise the awareness of IFEEDER and engage more partners across the animal feed and pet food value chain, we recently launched a new website. Take a look and let us know what you think.
