Efforts with The Context Network are underway to advance the role and recognition of animal food as a sustainability solution for feed and pet food customers. With over 20 committed partners, objectives include defining data and the indicators that will support customers’ needs, quantifying the environmental benefits of animal food innovations and supporting the development and use of life cycle assessments (LCA). In collaboration with Iowa State University (ISU), IFEEDER is also sharing real stories of the ways the industry is taking action on its sustainability pillars — People, Planet and Governance.
Released in 2023, the toolkit includes practical tools, resources and insights that feed grain and oilseed processors, animal feed and pet food manufacturers, ingredient suppliers and equipment manufacturers can use now to advance their sustainability programs and engage stakeholders. New materials will be added following the conclusion of the Sustainability Road Map - Phase 2 work.
In partnership with The Nature Conservancy and Dairy Management Inc., dairy feed management additives are being evaluated to inform greenhouse gas mitigation actions for cattle. Funded by a U.S. Department of Agriculture Conservation Innovation Grant, the work is focusing on economic and social considerations to inform the Natural Resources Conservation Service’s conservation incentive programs.
Serving as the basis for formulating U.S. commercial and research swine diets, IFEEDER is supporting the update of the Nutrient Requirements for Swine to ensure advances in swine nutrition research are incorporated. Collectively, feed efficiency, feed cost reductions and profitability drive continuous improvements in pork production.
Led by ISU, IFEEDER is using a fraction of this $1 million grant from the National Pork Board to compile improved LCA data on feed ingredients used in swine diets.
With ISU, IFEEDER is using funds, awarded by the United Soybean Board, to advance a method for developing a robust and current LCA dataset for U.S. soybeans, corn and wheat. The project will also conduct a sensitivity analysis on the impact of the geographic scale of data aggregation on LCA data inputs and outcomes.
